Day 5 of The Peaceful Parenting Challenge: Being A Consistent Parent
In order for children to feel safe and secure in the world, they need to know that their parents are consistent.
Being consistent means following through with what you say you will do. If you tell your child you will read a story together, make sure you follow through. If you tell them they can’t have a cookie before dinner, don’t give them one later on when they plead with you. Consistency is key when it comes to parenting peacefully. In today’s challenge, we will discuss the importance of following through with your promises and how it can help build trust between yourself and your child.
When parents are inconsistent, it can be confusing and unsettling for children.
They may not know what to expect from one day to the next, which can lead to a lot of anxiety. When parents follow through with their promises, it helps children feel safe and secure. They understand that they can count on their parents to be there for them and do as they say they will, no matter what. This builds trust between parent and child, which is essential for a healthy relationship.
So how do you go about following through?
It’s actually not as difficult as it may seem. The key is to be firm but fair and always keep your child’s best interests in mind. If you make a promise, stick to it. If you need to change your plans, let your child know as soon as possible and explain why. And always remember to be patient and understanding. Children don’t always understand why things have to be a certain way. It’s up to us as parents to help them see the reasoning behind our decisions.
Following through doesn’t just apply to promises, though.
It’s important to follow through with the consequences you give your children. If you tell your child that they must finish their vegetables before they can leave the table… follow through. If you do not stay consistent in what you say or give in when your child whines, your child will catch on quickly and notice that they can bend what mommy (and daddy) say with just a bit of protesting. Soon, they may stop following your rules altogether.
The key takeaway here is to be patient and consistent with your children.
Follow through with what you say you are going to do, and be sure to explain the reasoning behind your decisions. This will help build trust between yourself and your child, which is essential for a healthy relationship.
Today’s challenge is to sit down and pinpoint areas where you may not be consistent in your parenting. Creating an action plan for following through is easier when you know what areas need work. The action plan will lead to a more peaceful home 🙂
