5 Natural Morning Sickness Remedies

It’s here. Those two lines on your pregnancy test have turned pink! What now? Do you feel any symptoms at all? Headaches? Morning sickness? Frequent urination?

Chances are your very first symptom will be a missed period. Shortly after, you may start feeling more intense symptoms.

A symptom of pregnancy in the first trimester that can hit you like a ton of bricks is morning sickness. An estimated 70-80% of women experience some form of morning sickness.

What Is Morning Sickness?

You have probably heard this term before. But what exactly is morning sickness?

Unfortunately, despite the name, morning sickness can hit you at anytime of the day.

Morning sickness is nausea and vomiting associated with pregnancy. It can begin around the sixth week of pregnancy, or a little after.

When you start to experience morning sickness, it may come on suddenly, hitting you like a ton of bricks, or it can start gradually.

Some women experience no morning sickness at all. If you are one of those women, yay! Enjoy it because morning sickness is utterly miserable.

I experienced morning sickness with all four of my pregnancies. My babies were absolutely worth every minute, but while I was in the midst of my morning sickness, I was downright miserable.

Why Do Some Women Experience Morning Sickness?

There can be many different reasons for morning sickness. The main reason is because of high levels of the pregnancy hormone HCG. (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin)

Morning sickness is extremely uncomfortable but it can be a good indication that your pregnancy is progressing and is healthy. Although, many women with healthy pregnancies experience no morning sickness.

How Long Does Morning Sickness Last?

When you have morning sickness, one of the first questions you may have is “how long will this last?”

Morning sickness lasts typically through the first trimester in many women. It starts around the 6th or 7th week of pregnancy. Then it progressively gets worse until around the 9th or 10th week. You may find that after the 10th week your morning sickness may start to decrease in severity, tapering off between the 12th and 14th week.

However, sometimes sickness will last longer than the average of 12 weeks, or the first trimester. It’s possible for women to have morning sickness through to the 20th week or even through their entire pregnancy.

Even though morning sickness can be a good indication of a healthy and thriving pregnancy, that doesn’t mean you don’t want some kind of relieve from it. The first thing many women do when hit with sickness are look for natural remedies. I gathered 5 remedies that may help you get through and cope with morning sickness. It is important to note that I am not a doctor, simple a mom who has been there four times and wants to offer some light at the end of the tunnel.

5 Natural Remedies For Morning Sickness

Eat Small Frequent Meals

During your first trimester, it may be difficult for your stomach to handle large meals. In contrast, having an empty stomach can make your nausea worse.

You can try to curb your nausea and vomiting by eating small and frequent meals or snacks throughout the day.

Some foods that can help are saltine crackers, dry cereals, or even toast.

If you experience nausea when you wake up, it can be helpful to place these foods next to your bed and eat them as soon as you wake up before you get out of bed. I used to eat a small meal, drink some sprite and then wait for around 20 minutes before I got out of bed.

Steer Clear of Foods That Make You Nauseous

Certain foods may make your sickness worse or even trigger vomiting.

When I was pregnant with our first child, I could not stand the smell of chicken. If I walked into the grocery store and smelled rotisserie chicken, I immediately felt the need to vomit and had to leave.

If you have any food aversions, your body will let you know right away. Try to steer clear of those foods and drinks, even if you love them! (For my last pregnancy I cannot drink coffee without feeling sick to my stomach.)

It’s also important to try and stay away from spicy, greasy and fatty foods if you are experience morning sickness because these foods can trigger nausea and vomiting, making your sickness worse.

Suck on Peppermint candies or Drink Peppermint Tea

Sucking on a mint or peppermint candy may keep your nausea or vomiting at bay.

Try keeping a stash of peppermint candies laying around so you can easily grab one if your nausea hits.

Don’t like peppermint candies?

Try sipping on peppermint tea. This may help in the morning or whenever your nausea is at it’s worst.

Ginger

Speaking of teas, ginger can help curb nausea and vomiting

If you aren’t a fan of peppermint, try sipping on ginger tea throughout the day or when your sickness is at it’s worst.

Try ginger chews or you may also be able to get ground ginger in a capsule to take everyday. But like anything, be sure to ask your doctor what is safest for you and your pregnancy.

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 is sold over the counter and can be an effective way to ease morning sickness in your pregnancy.

During the first trimester of my last pregnancy, I had extreme sickness. We tried everything but the only natural remedy that seemed to work was Vitamin B6.

Be sure to ask your doctor before you take any extra medicine, however B6 should be able safe to try during your pregnancy.

What Do You Do When All Else Fails?

If you are experiencing nausea and vomiting, it is always important to let your doctor know, even before trying natural remedies. If you try all the natural remedies that you can find and nothing still isn’t working, talk to your doctor about what the next step should be. It may be keeping a watchful eye on your symptoms, looking at natural remedies you haven’t done, or taking over the counter medication that you feel comfortable with.

Whatever you and your doctor decide, morning sickness can be extremely debilitating and it’s important to be mindful of your symptoms because you can become dehydrated from it.

If you are experiencing frequent vomiting and cannot keep any liquids down, call the on call nurse as soon as you can.
