7 Important Things To Do As Soon As You Become Pregnant.

The pregnancy test just turned positive. You’re pregnant. Now what? This time is one of the most exciting and scariest times you may be experiencing so far in your life.

Now that the pregnancy test is positive, what are you supposed to do? So many things may be running through your mind. There are so many things to think about, but what are you supposed to do first when you find out you’re pregnant?

It’s Finally here, the day you have been waiting for, or the surprise you hadn’t even thought about.

Wherever you stand in your pregnancy journey, there are certain steps you need to take as soon as those two pink lines show up!

The pregnancy world is jam-packed with advice on what to do while you are pregnant. It is full of cute ideas for gender reveals and telling your family and friends you are pregnant.

As soon as you find out you’re pregnant you may start googling these exciting milestones, create an account on BabyCenter, or hit add to cart on those cute maternity clothes you have been eying.

But what should you really focus on first?

With so many new steps to think about and a new life to consider, what are the most important first steps on your pregnancy journey?

I gathered a few essential steps that can help you on your way to a healthy start to your pregnancy right away!

How important are these steps really?

If you are asking yourself how important are these first steps really? The answer is VERY!

These steps can help you give your child and yourself a healthy start to your pregnancy.

The health of you and your baby should quickly become your number one priority.

Just a note: Of course, in pregnancy there are certain things you cannot prevent. There may be health challenges that you face in your pregnancy.

Sometimes, you do everything right and it still is not the outcome you were hoping for.

However, there are steps you can take right now to make sure the beginning of your pregnancy runs smoothly and that you get the nutrients and guidance that you need throughout this journey!

7 Important Things to Do As Soon As You Become Pregnant.

Call your doctor for confirmation.

One of the very first things you should do when those two lines appear is call your doctor! Your doctor may have you come in and they will be able to confirm that you are indeed pregnant!

If you do not have a family physician or need a specialist, high risk OB, or even if you are considering a midwife, your regular family doctor should be able to point you in the right direction.

The reason this step is so important is threefold.

One, your doctor will and can confirm you’re actually pregnant and help you determine the correct due date.

Two, your doctor will supply you with information that is important to have during the start of your pregnancy. Whether it is your first pregnancy or fourth pregnancy, most offices will provide this educational material that will prove useful as your pregnancy progresses.

This information covers several aspects of pregnancy, such as what is and isn’t safe to eat. What medications you can take and what labor feels like.

Review any family or personal history with your doctor.

Family and personal history is an important aspect of pregnancy.

My family and personal history includes Pre-Eclampsia in previous pregnancies. Knowing this allows my doctor to review the steps we need to take in order for me to have a safe and healthy pregnancy moving forward.

If you do not know your family history, talk to your mom or family members. How was your mom’s pregnancy with you and your siblings? Did she have any complications pop up? Were you born early? If so, why? Etc.

Do you have any personal pregnancy history? What is it? Be sure to share every detail with your OB. This will allow your OB to know what to expect moving forward and what to look out for if complications run in your family or personal history. This is an important first step because it allows you to create a plan for the healthiest pregnancy you can have. Knowledge is power, right?

Start a prenatal vitamin.

This step is so self explanatory but equally important!

Start taking your prenatal vitamin as soon as you find out your pregnant.

If you are in the planning stages and not pregnant yet, start taking a prenatal vitamin when you start trying for a baby.

This will allow your child to start receiving those essential vitamins that they need to grow strong and healthy, that they may otherwise be missing.

Tell anyone who needs to know, including the baby’s father.

One of the first things we start thinking about when we get those two lines is “who do we tell?”

Start thinking about who needs to know. One of those people should be the baby’s father. Now, I know that some sensitive situations do not allow for the baby’s father to know. A one night stand, for example.

Whatever your situation is, start thinking about who should know that you are pregnant. One should be your doctor, then probably the baby’s daddy. (if it’s a healthy situation.) Anyone else you decide is solely up to your discretion.

Make the list of who to tell right away and who to wait to tell. This is your pregnancy, whoever you feel comfortable telling you should! If you want to wait to tell people until half way through, that’s okay.

If you want to wait until baby is born, that’s okay to! It’s your decision.

If you are waiting to tell everyone, like on social media for example, when you do tell your family or close friends first, be sure to ask them to keep this news to themselves until you are ready!

Call your insurance.

This may be a step you don’t think about. However, calling your insurance is an important step!

The reason is because sometimes insurance plans have exceptions to their plans that you don’t realize until your OB office is trying to process a claim.

For example, some private insurances do not cover pregnancy unless there are complications. This is an unwanted obstacle. And also why secondary insurance can come in handy.

Knowing exactly what to expect from your insurance plan and what you need to do to prepare and receive the best possible coverage is so important. They also need to know that you are pregnant so they can include it in your health history!

Stop any unhealthy habits, including smoking and alcohol.

If you have an unhealthy habit, now is the time to kick it.

In order to give your child the best start they possibly can have, try to stop smoking or drinking any alcohol.

There are also certain foods and drink that you are not supposed to eat or drink or have very limited amounts of. For me, my addiction is caffeine. My morning sickness ended up taking care of that habit for me.

Take stock of your habits. Which ones are healthy? Which ones could cause harm to your baby? If you can quit cold turkey, great! If not, try to ease these habits out as quickly as possible.

Start or continue a healthy diet.

If you are currently on a healthy diet, continue it!

If you are not currently eating a healthy diet, then start!

It is important to eat what is healthy but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your occasional indulgences as long as it is considered safe for pregnancy! (chocolate, anyone?)

If you are working out or are on an exercise plan, talk with your doctor, however in most cases it should be okay to continue on it.

Being pregnant can be a joyous experience for women. Getting a healthy start is important.

Pregnancy should and can be a joyful experience for you. If you are unsure where to start when you see those two lines turn pink, start here. Take one step and one day at a time and enjoy the process of creating and bringing a new life into the world!
