Wind chime nature craft for kids.

Recently, I started letting the big kids stay up from “quiet time.” I want them to enjoy staying awake and being “big” while the babies napped. But I don’t want them to be disruptive. That is why I decided to try out this fun wind chime nature craft with them.

My kids, left to their own devices, can sometimes be disruptive. Cranky babies woken early from their nap is not fun. (anyone agree?)

I decided to be intentional about these two hours with these kiddos. I introduced our craft/make it time. It has quickly become my favorite time of day! – It’s the girls’ favorite to!

A couple of weeks ago we went on a nature walk.

The girls collected big bags full of treasures. Then we came home and created wind chimes. I was inspired from someone on Instagram (when I find the account I’ll link it!) to make this craft.

To make this fun nature wind chime, you’ll need the following supplies:

  • mason jar rings
  • construction paper (or you could use contact paper! which would probably work better but we were all out, and the girls’ fingers were itchy!)
  • white glue
  • string
  • items from nature: leaves flowers, etc.
  • sequins and glitter
  • a stick.
  • hole punch

First step: Collect your nature items. This is a fun chance to go on on a nature walk with your child.

Second step: Cut out the construction paper or contact paper in a circle to fit the mason jar rings, punch a hole into the paper and then glue the paper on the inside of the ring.

Third step: Encourage your child to decorate their rings however they want! This could take two minutes or two hours depending on how meticulous your child is. 🙂 I have one rusher and one meticulous one.

Fourth step: Allow the rings to dry.

Fifth step: Thread the string through the hole in the paper, tie it off and then tie to the stick. Do this with all the rings. Tie another piece of string to the top of the stick and hang it up to be admired!

If you use construction paper, I suggest bringing the wind chime inside or hanging it where it won’t get wet. I do think these turned out pretty cute!
